Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

About One Less Car

We are your neighbors and friends who want to improve the quality of life for us all by helping to reclaim our basic right to freedom of mobility. We are committed to reversing the harm done to our collective well being, the unraveling of our neighborhoods and communities, and the increased risks we face daily due to our society's focus on the automobile at the exclusion of other modes.

We advocate for providing safe and effective cycling and walking for all citizens through education, lobbying, and facilitation between our communities, governments, and state and local representatives.

So, please arrive at Harbor Point by 6:15AM. Our chief registration officials, Charina Chatman and Bob Carson, will give you detailed directions upon your arrival. Tasks available are (1) to check in the pre-registered people, (2) distribute T-shirts, (3) help with food service and clean up. Those wishing to ride the route may do so after the registration process is well in hand.

Rest Stop - You will be helping at either Riverside Park or North Point State Park to ensure that food, water, and Gatorade are available to the riders at all times. Provide the riders with a smile and some cheerful encouragement - weâ€(tm)re having fun! Please arrive at your assigned rest stop by 7:30 AM. When the rest stop closes at 10:30, please help clean up and leave the area even cleaner than we found it so that we will continue to be a welcome guest at these locations.

Ride/Walk Marshal - Please be on the route after the participants have started and space yourselves 10 to 15 minutes apart. Your primary duty is to ride/walk along with the participants, keeping an eye out for participants ensure they are exhibiting safe behavior and remind the riders to obey all the traffic rules, especially at intersections. Remind riders to be no more than two abreast and to keep to the right to "share the road" with cars. Riders without helmets should be reminded of the requirement to wear one. Otherwise they are excluded from the event...Also keep a lookout for any unsafe situations on the route and take quick action to remedy them or at least mitigate them.
