Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Getting urban design right

I hate that it is so difficult to get developers to do the right thing in the city, while smart growth, fundamentally a suburban development movement, is about getting urban design right, but in suburban areas, making it even harder for center cities to compete.

From the new ULI report, Ten Principles for Smart Growth on the Suburban Fringe

1. Create a Shared Vision for the Future . . . and Stick to It

2. Identify and Sustain Green Infrastructure

3. Remember that the Right Design in the Wrong Place Is Not Smart Growth

4. Protect Environmental Systems and Conserve Resources

5. Provide Diverse Housing Types and Opportunities

6. Build Centers of Concentrated Mixed Uses

7. Use Multiple Connections to Enhance Mobility and Circulation

8. Deliver Sustainable Transportation Choices

9. Preserve the Community’s Character

10. Make It Easy to Do the Right Thing

------------
Why aren't these universally held urban design and placemaking principles?
