Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Green mobility vs. green driving (and green living vs. green building)

in response to a proposal to accentuate the positive and promote green driving:

the best green driver is on a bicycle. I get tired of all the people clamoring for green construction in the U.S., as they continue to drive cars. I am not knocking the convenience of an automobile, but there is no question that the various effects, from the use of a nonrenewable resource to dead soldiers and citizens in Iraq, are considerable. A "support our troops" yellow ribbon is also positive.

Green driving measures induce more driving, likely of vehicles with a single occupant. If it is the case that from 14% to 25% of total driving trips are induced -- Traffic Impact of Highway Capacity Reductions: Assessment of the Evidence -- then I have to spend my time not on green driving, but on green mobility.
