Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Ferry commuting on the Potomac

I don't care so much about this, as I am more focused on transportation and mobility within the core, but I think working on such modes as ferry commuting is fine. It's particularly interesting when you think about how rivers and bodies of water were the main transportation routes in the country into the early part of the 20th century.

The Manassas Journal-Messenger reports, in "Ferry boat trial deemed a success," about a test of ferry service on the Potomac. (Thanks to Bacon's Rebellion for the link.)
