Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Landau's Country Fresh Produce bicycle delivery, Brooklyn

The Eastern Market merchants aren't keen on closing 7th Street in front of Eastern Market. Instead they are advocating for parking. Finally, they have it down right for closing the street, at least on Sundays, now that the vendors located on the street have permeable booths (meaning you can walk through).

I say that rather than encourage people to drive to the market, and frankly, there is no parking enforcement on Sundays so who is to say that the spaces truly turn over, that Eastern Market should offer shared delivery services.

Better that one delivery vehicle deliver to multiple people/households rather than have multiple cars come to the market.

There has never been an economic market study for Eastern Market.

There is no master plan for Eastern Market.

I doubt that a substantive transportation demand management study has ever been performed.

Or a survey of consumers who shop there (or who don't shop there).

It makes trying to create the best policies very very very very very very difficult.
