Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Light rail for Southern Maryland?

See "Study to Weigh Feasibility Of White Plains Rail Line," from the Southern Maryland Extra section of the Washington Post.

Although I will say it depends on what they want the system to do. If it's to move people to and from the core of the region, maybe a railroad line makes more sense. Of course, if they also want to provide intra-Charles County transit, that wouldn't work. But light rail lines in relatively underpopulated areas with little in the way of compact development opportunities (I don't know if that's the case for this proposal) don't make much sense.
