Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Sundries And Canned Goods, Corner Grocery, Old Alabama Town,Montgomery, AL

(Flickr image from Lone Cypress, who writes: Old Alabama Town is a collection of authentically restored 19th and 20th century structures that stretches along six blocks in the heart of historic downtown Montgomery, Alabama.)

While looking for something else, I came across the Your Town Alabama project, which helps small towns focus and revitalize, using planning and design processes. It's similar to the Main Street approach, with a much stronger focus on planning and design.
