Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Beautiful Italy -- a declining brand

Simon Anholt's blog has a number of fascinating posts, including the decline of Italy as a national brand ("Is Italy going out of fashion?"), the Invest in Denmark program ("Denmark's Good Name"), and the brand identity market development issues faced by former Soviet Bloc nations that had their local cultures destroyed in favor of Sovietization ("Latvia and the legacy of Communism").

And about the futility of how the U.S. government approaches "public diplomacy" ("America's Public Diplomacy and Our Planet").
