Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

A video by Carlos Pardo of the Sustainable Urban Transport Project.

Also Alan Durning writes an entry about the the need for bicyclists (but I would say for those committed to sustainable mobility) to organize, using the example of the American Automobile Association. See "Winning Bicycle Respect."

It happens that is something I've written about in the past, at least about the AAA. And I wrote a long letter in response to the very first piece that became the Dr. Gridlock column in the Washington Post, suggesting that he was not calling for the creation of a commuters lobby, but a automobile lobby.

Related is the need for constituency building: see this blog entry "Thinking about constituency building at the start of a new administration," as an example.

And speaking of "organizing," there are three holiday parties all on the same day, December 5th, one in NYC, which are good opportunities for organizing on this issue:

1. Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells Livable Walkable Awards Celebration.

2. DC Chapter of Sierra Club Annual Holiday Party and Silent Auction.

3. Transportation Alternatives in NYC Holiday Party
