Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Accountability is something new in DC

While the City Government still has some housecleaning to do about the scandal in the Tax Office, a number of people have been fired over it. Mayor Fenty has also fired a number of Child and Family Services employees as a result of the recent tragedy of the four children allegedly killed by their mother. See "Fenty Fires 6 In Girls' Deaths," from the Post.

It's a new day in the city with this kind of action. In the past, mostly people would just get transferred to other jobs, without much penalty. See "Principal Problem In DC Schools: No Accountability," from the Washington Post, published in 2004, about a principal who lied about credentials. Eventually she was transferred from this school, but my understanding is that she still works for the DC Public Schools.
