Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Another Baltimore website and program

I keep forgetting to mention Greener Baltimore, which is the repositioned website to promote community involvement in the Baltimore City Government's Department of Recreation and Parks -- "promoting volunteer service projects in Baltimore City parks.

Imagine, a city agency promoting community involvement...

I have mentioned before how the DRP has an invasive weeds involvement program and other stuff.

Plus, they have been running a series of programs on building the capacity of local community organizations, of course, focused on people involved in parks groups, including a session in two weeks.

From their e-newsletter:

April GROWshop

Learn how to sustain community involvement! Join Baltimore City Recreation and Parks and the Parks & People Foundation on Monday, April 7 for the next GROWshop, focused on "Sustaining Community Involvement."

Lane Victorson,
University of Maryland School of Social Work (UMBSSW), will teach you how to use community organizing techniques to keep the momentum going in your park stewardship group.

Lane received his masters degree from the University of Maryland School of Social Work. He has worked in community practice for over 10 years and is currently a Faculty Field Instructor at the UMBSSW and the coordinator at the SWCOS Neighborhood and Peace Corps Fellow Program.
When? Monday, April 7, 2008. Sign in at 5:30pm, learn from 6pm-7pm and mingle with fellow park stewards from 7pm-8pm!
