AP story on DC's bicycle sharing program

ran in the Examiner, see "DC to launch nation's first European-style bike share," and features photos of Jim Sebastian, the pedestrian, bicycling, and transportation demand management coordinator for DC's Department of Transportation.

The system allows annual members to pick up and drop off bicycles in the city, and is the first such program to launch in the United States. The European-style bike-sharing service is similar to car-sharing services like Zipcar. (AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin)

The story has nice details about similar programs elsewhere.

In transit promotion, there is a lot of discussion about "the last mile" problem, about people taking transit still having to get to their final destination from the transit stop, and that this can be an issue. Bicycle sharing may be one way to address this.
