Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Do you think DC is the #3 big city arts destination after New York City and Chicago

See "Top 25 Arts Destinations" By the Staff of AmericanStyle Magazine. The story lists 25 destinations for big cities, and 25 destinations for smaller cities. DC is listed ahead of San Francisco and Boston. Granted, DC has many free museums (the Smithsonian Institution), but that is one aspect. A thriving visual and cultural arts world should be another dimension. The quality of the performing arts world should be another dimension. The magazine (the publisher also produces Niche magazine for the gallery and arts district management worlds) leans towards the visual arts.
