Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

I hope they're wrong in London, but...

From the Guardian:

-- Johnson on course to become London mayor: Senior Tories '99% certain' that Boris Johnson will beat Ken Livingstone in mayoral contest
-- 10 reasons why Ken's campaign failed to perform.

Change is difficult, and you can never take your standing for granted. And who gets elected really does matter, as the long four years of Republican Governor Robert Ehrlich proved in Maryland, as does the tenure of people like Transportation Secretary Mary Peters...

While the results won't be announced til 5 pm today our time, according to the Evening Standard, "'Boris is the Mayor'." From the article:

After a nailbiting count, Mr Johnson was so far ahead on first-preference votes he could not be caught by Mr Livingstone, even after second preferences were taken into account. Labour officials conceded privately that the Conservative was too far ahead. At 5pm, Mr Livingstone's campaign chief Tessa Jowell said: "The reports I'm getting suggest Boris Johnson is ahead.

Also from the Standard, "Mayor Boris says he's chairman of the board. They'd better be good."
