Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

From a press release:

Mayor Fenty Announces New District Agency and Office Directors

WASHINGTON, DC— In an effort to continue the momentum of ensuring the District is transformed into a world-class city, today Mayor Adrian M. Fenty announced the appointments of four District agency and office directors.Today’s announcements include:

• Gabe Klein, District Department of Transportation
• Lee A. Smith III, Department of Small and Local Business Development
• Bridget Davis, Office of Policy and Legislative Affairs
• Tracy Sandler, Office of Boards and Commissions

Gabe Klein, director, District Department of Transportation

Gabe Klein is an entrepreneurial executive with over 12 years experience leading marketing, business development, and operations efforts for both start-up and established retail, transportation and technology-oriented companies. Klein has proven experience partnering with government and business sectors in the District of Columbia.

He is the co-founder and most recently served as the Chief Executive Officer of On the Fly, an innovative, boutique food-service company with retail, wholesale, catering and events businesses all-in-one. In 2007, Klein and his On the Fly team designed and launched next-generation electric smartkarts, which deliver high quality natural foods to DC residents, workers and visitors in densely trafficked areas. He collaborated with the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) and Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA), as well as the Smithsonian museum, local universities and private developers to place smartkarts in locations throughout the city.

From 2002 to 2006, Klein demonstrated his commitment to reducing America’s carbon footprint as regional vice president of Zipcar, where he helped pioneer the concept of carsharing in the United States and built a thriving business model in the District. Within 4 years, membership grew by over 1000 percent and approximately 500 green vehicles were brought to the Washington metropolitan area. As a result, the region achieved profitable operating results.

At the end of Klein’s tenure at Zipcar, the city was the nation’s largest carsharing city by membership and vehicles. Klein earned a Bachelor of Science in marketing management from Virginia Tech in 1994, and has been a resident of the District of Columbia for 14 years.
