Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

The Giant supermarket independence sham...

When Giant Supermarkets announced a new logo (press release), the local press reported it duly, such as in "Giant Puts on a Fresh Face For Its Supermarket Upgrades" from the Washington Post.

The reality is that it's the same new logo used by parent and controlling organization Stop and Shop, which is based in Boston. Stop and Shop runs Giant as part of the overall company just as Hechts ran Strawbridges as Hechts branches even though the stores had Strawbridge logos, names, etc.

So the press missed the story.
