Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Deanwood Heritage Trail Launch Event -- Saturday April 4th

Another press release -- something to do after the Florida Market tour. I will try to go to this myself as that neighborhood is one I am relatively unfamiliar with. Also see this article from East of the River, "Deanwood Celebrates Past, Present and Future."

I know there are lots of choices of what you can do this weekend. I hope that Saturday you will choose to spend some time with us as we launch, "A Self-Reliant People: Greater Deanwood Heritage Trail," a self-guided walking tour of the Deanwood neighborhood.

The trail consists of 15 poster-sized street signs, which combine text, historic photographs, and maps. It offers a chance to explore a historic neighborhood that began as slave plantations and developed into an autonomous, close-knit African American community.

When: Saturday, April 4
1 – 4 pm
Where: Riverside Center
5200 Foote Street (now Marvin Gaye Way)
How much? Free!

There will be music, refreshments, community events along the trail, and a wax figure of Marvin Gaye!

The unveiling ceremony starts at 1 pm
