Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Contested streets documentary: this Sunday on the Sundance Channel

Transportation Alternatives is the amazing advocacy group in the New York City region that addresses sustainable transportation issues, especially walking and bicycling. They have produced a documentary called "Contested Streets":

that explores the rich diversity of New York City street life before the introduction of automobiles and shows how New York can follow the example of other modern cities that have reclaimed their streets as vibrant public spaces.

Contested Streets features new footage of reclaimed streets in London, Paris and Copenhagen and interviews with New York savvy notables such as Ken Jackson, Mike Wallace, Bob Kiley, Majora Carter, Kathryn Wylde, Enrique Peñalosa, James Howard Kunstler and many more.

I caught a bit of this on tv the other night, but I fell asleep (my brutal public transit commute to and from the Baltimore region many days of the week means I fall asleep pretty early...) so I am glad to know that it repeats on the Sundance Channel this Sunday at 11am. (Yes, I could tape it...)
