Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Back to school #4: The issues in schools are timeless

I like looking at back issues of magazines like Life, Look, Saturday Evening Post, and Collier's for the stories, photos, and the ads.  Life and Look especially, because they focused on current events.  It seems as if 67 years ago, teacher shortages, etc., were prime issues, just as they are today.  Saturday Evening Post and Collier's from the 1950s and before are best for ads.

This article focuses on one science teacher who because he doesn't get enough money for supplies, makes his own apparatuses, and he works at nights and on weekends to make extra money since his pay isn't high enough to pay for raising his family.
