Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Using the air (intensifying land use)

This strip mall was redeveloped with senior housing on top. It's a mixed use strip mall. Photo by MitchE, from the Skyscrapers Forum.

My friend-colleague Drew hates economists, but the reality is, if you read urban economics about how cities develop, it's all about locational advantages and the cost of transportation. As land becomes more expensive and valuable, use is usually intensified.

Mixed use is about reaping transit and locational advantages.
