Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Read a book...

(with appreciation for the Washington region's own D-Mite, see YouTube - Read A Book.)

Seacoastonline reported on a 24-hour reading marathon at a local bookstore. From the article:

It's not unusual to see several people reading at the SecondRun Bookstore, but Sunday's bleary-eyed crowd had been doing so for 24 hours straight. "It's been a really long, but fun, 24 hours," said Michele Filgate, the events coordinator for RiverRun Bookstore.

"Great Expectations: A Reading Marathon" began at 6 p.m. on Saturday before wrapping up at 6 p.m. Sunday, featuring games of literary Trivial Pursuit, food donated by area businesses, and appearances by Seacoast authors. Except for short naps, the more than 15 participants read through the night, morning and afternoon hours, watching the Saturday late-night crowd amble by the storefront windows.

At the end of the evening, Portsmouth High School senior Rose Neilson was the only reader who had gotten by without a wink of sleep, earning her a gift certificate. She was most of the way through the 800-page "Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell," a novel by Susanna Clarke.
