Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

The street is now closed on Saturdays and Sundays, except that the Eastern market merchants keep fighting it, stating that they need the parking for their customers. At 1 PM yesterday, there were 22 empty parking spaces at the C Street parking lot between 6th and 7th Streets behind Sizzling Express.)

A reminder about Wednesday night's Pedestrian Safety Forum at Hine Jr. High School, 6:30 p.m. This is the first meeting of a two part series hosted by Councilmember Tommy Wells on improving pedestrian safety in Ward 6 and the city.

The first forum is scheduled for Wednesday, February 27th, 6:30-8:00 p.m. The focus of the first forum will be to work with residents and local Advisory Neighborhood Commissions to identify specific problems facing pedestrian safety.

The second forum is scheduled for Saturday, March 15th, 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The focus of the second forum will be on creating solutions for the problems identified at the first forum.

The Department of Transportation will be involved to share their latest efforts, and experts will be on hand to discuss pedestrian safety and traffic engineering strategies that can improve our neighborhoods. In addition, the solutions forum will include breakout sessions where residents and community leaders can spend time working on specific problems and develop strategies.

Both forums will be held at Hine Junior High School, 335 8th Street SE, Washington, DC 20003. The school is conveniently located near Eastern Market Metro Station to improve accessibility for the ward.
