Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Walkable communities

Sometimes you read so much, go to so many community meetings, go to so many conferences that you forget stuff. The Twin Cities Streets for People website reminds us of Dan Burden, who has done a number of workshops in DC, including in Adams-Morgan in 2003, by linking to this Associated Press article in the Christian Science Monitor article, "He wants to reclaim towns for pedestrians."

Dan's website, Walkable Communities is very good, and includes this article, "How Can I Find and Help Build a Walkable Community?," which I recommend to people all the time.
