Article on Jaime Lerner
The former mayor of Curitiba Brazil is known for many urban innovations, including the creation of bus rapid transit. Some criticism of his work is that he did this as an appointed mayor during a dictatorship. See "Urban regeneration: Quiet revolution" from the Guardian. (And "The Road to Curitiba" from the New York Times.)
(I have not read the critical book by Clara Irazábal, Urban Governance and City Making in the Americas: Curitiba and Portland.)
Labels: bus rapid transit, sustainable land use and resource planning, transportation planning, urban design/placemaking
