Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Article on Jaime Lerner

The former mayor of Curitiba Brazil is known for many urban innovations, including the creation of bus rapid transit. Some criticism of his work is that he did this as an appointed mayor during a dictatorship. See "Urban regeneration: Quiet revolution" from the Guardian. (And "The Road to Curitiba" from the New York Times.)

(I have not read the critical book by Clara Irazábal, Urban Governance and City Making in the Americas: Curitiba and Portland.)
