Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

A Massachusetts State Senator blogs on transportation reform

According to this piece, "Beacon Hill goes digital - LOL," from the Boston Globe about the use of various digital technologies and applications by politicians and government officials in Massachusetts, Senator Steven A. Baddour from Methuen has a blog, Mass Trans for Tomorrow, where he writes about state transportation reform.

I can't claim I know whether or not his efforts are great. After all, some people want to "reform" transportation policy by eliminating funding for any mode other than automobiles and trucks.

His most current post, "Reform before Revenue: An Act Modernizing the Transportation Systems of the Commonwealth" is the entire almost 80,000 word text of a bill he just introduced. It's more about agency consolidation, and probably more in response to proposals to increase tolls by the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority, than about the kind of reform of transportation policy towards a focus on complete places, optimal mobility, and urban transportation systems that aren't automobile-centric. Still, it's a step. (Well, former Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters had a blog too.)
