Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

An example of history being written by the winners: Memorial park sign(National Park Service): Victims of Communism memorial

Having been particularly interested in the history and culture of Latin America while in college, and learning about the impact of U.S. military intervention and participation in many South American countries, I must say that I find this memorial interesting and ironic. Where is the monument for "victims of capitalism?" (And can you imagine such an authorization bill for such a monument making it through Congress?)

I wondered this after reading this recent Nicholas Kristof column, "At Stake are more than banks" in the New York Times. From the article:

“In London, Washington and Paris, people talk of bonuses or no bonuses,” Robert Zoellick, the World Bank president, said this week. “In parts of Africa, South Asia and Latin America, the struggle is for food or no food.”
