Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Weird stuff #1: Clark Ray running for City Council

Given that the Clark Ray agenda (tough on crime, Mayoral control of the schools) is simpatico with Mayor Fenty and seemingly oppositional to Phil Mendelson, the at-large DC City Councilmember who is quite progressive and a thorn in the side of the Mayor because he doesn't jump when the Mayor says jump, I have always been skeptical of Clark Ray's "firing" (he was fired) as director of the DC Department of Parks and Recreation. Sure, he was fired. But I think he was just being set up to be able to run for City Council as someone "independent" of the Mayor. But is he really? (See "Clark Ray Axed" from the Washington City Paper.)

Now, sure some of the people supporting Clark Ray are not likely to be friends of the Mayor anymore (they resigned/fired) but lots of his supporters are in Team Fenty. (See "Political Split" from the Washington Blade, Ray going after Mendelson's DC Council seat" from the Examiner, and "Clark Ray Takes On Mendo" from the Washington City Paper.)

So I do wonder.

(Disclosure: I support Mendelson.)
