Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Speaking of balancing transportation modes and transportation demand management planning

From Time Magazine, a story I missed, about accommodating bicyclists through "valet parking." See "How Valet Parking Could Save the Planet."

Hmm, can shared retail district-provided delivery services be far behind?

In the context of the bike rental service from Adshel that will be rolled out in DC, they said that they are focusing on downtown in terms of locating centers. Likely, one will be at Union Station. So I have suggested planning locations around trip times. Logically, it would be worth having a rental location at the Eastern Market Metro Plaza, which would be a 15 minute or so bike ride from Union Station...

And I will repeat the suggestion that the Downtown YWCA and Rhode Island Avenue YMCA and the DC JCC could create special club memberships for bicyclist-commuters.
