Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Quote of the day

From "Deputy Mayor Leaving to Run Bloomberg L.P.," about the resignation of NYC's Deputy Mayor for Economic Development, Dan Doctoroff:

Michael Sorkin, director of the graduate urban design program at City College, said Mr. Doctoroff “reinvigorated interest in large projects for the urban agenda.” But his approach relied too heavily on private development as the catalyst for improvement, Mr. Sorkin said. “We’re asked to accept projects that are too big in exchange for some ancillary public benefit.”
