Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Enhancing bike route signage

I went to the Arrow Bicycles shop on Rte. 1 in Hyattsville on Friday in a tizzy as I broke the rear axle on my bike and the gf's bike had brake issues. Was in and out pretty quickly. (See "ARROW bicycle Grand Opening" from Washcycle.)

I got to thinking that this bike shop is about 3/4 mile from the Northwest Branch Trail, and that like the Midtown Freewheel Bike Shop in Minneapolis, trail signage should include directional information to this shop.

And that similar kinds of information about other bicycle shops and sources of air for tires should be listed on other bicycle route signage. Maybe restrooms... just as similar signage is posted on highways for automobile drivers.
