Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

"Buildings endure. Fashion rarely does."

is a blog entry by John Massengale on his blog, Veritas et Venustas. It's a response to another blog's (Design Observer) posting about the South Street Seaport in Manhattan, and provides John with the opportunity to opine about place, context, and architecture that endures. It's very good. I especially like his point about how through urban renewal destroying the buildings that had existed intensifies the "Disney" effect of the "renewed" retail experience at the Seaport.
