Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

The Demolition Machine in New Orleans

---------
Update: The Associated Press did a story, following the WSJ story below, "Home razing angering owners in NOrleans," and it lists the Squandered Heritage website.

See this piece from yesterday's Wall Street Journal, with great photos and video. "Katrina Survivors Face New Threat: City Demolition," is the story. This link will be live for only seven days.

Thanks to Reid for the link, and to Karen Gadbois for all that she is doing in New Orleans, to work to get the city to do the right thing.
Fighting demolition in New Orleans

I don't know how much it is ulterior motive in New Orleans (Growth Machine) and how much it is bad government and bad planning.

To see the impact of ulterior motive and demolition, check out one of the best series on historic preservation and demolition ever, from the Chicago Tribune (registration required for access).

And this related entry from ThinkNoLA, "Unannonuced Wholesale Demoltions and Karen Gabois on the Front Page of the Wall Street Journal."
